Tips For The Travelling Photographer

When traveling with Photo Equipment its best to be aware of dangers or problems you may face, here are a few tips for all photographers travelling this year.
1. When flying, carry your camera in your hndluggage to avoid damage.Always check with your airline’s web site or flight details to make sure you can carry-on handluggage as some airlines dont allow you to carry luggage onto the plane.
Digital cameras and memory cards shouldn’t be affected by the x-rays, but magnetic devices can harm them. Be careful of the conveyor belts they sometimes use powerful magnets so place your camera as far from the end as tou can.
2. When travelling by car keep your equipment cool by keeping it inside the car, always take your equipment with you never leave it unnatended even in the boot of your car.
3. Always keep your camera with you and make sure you know where it is at all times don’t hang it around your neck as it is easy to be cut off with a knife and is flaunting the expensive equipment.
4. When travelling it can be hard to know what to do with the images, be prepared for this, it can be annoying lugging memory devices around or a laptop I would advise upoading them to an image bank online at a cyber cafe, or get the images put onto a cd.
5. Make sure you insure your camera and equipment! When travelling your equipment could be lost stolen or damaged so make sure you have a good insurer that will cover all of this even in a foreign country.
6. Unless you are a pro always keep a manual to hand there will be new chances to try out different settings and features that british weather and scenery has never needed.
7. Remember your cables and plug adaptors, if your battery needs charging you’ll need a plug adaptor!
8. Avoid your camera being exposed to extreme sunlight.
9. If it rains protect your camera! Get it out of the rain asap.
10. If it gets cold avoid condensation by warming your camera up with your body heat. If you can’t stop the condensation, empty the battery compartment and take the memory card out keep these compartments open until they’re dry.You don’t want them to freeze either tho!
11. In extreme heat use a UV filter this will protect your lens.
12. Travel light, you don’t want to lug unnecessary lenses ‘just in case’.
15. Declare your camera and photo equipment with customs on department this will stop any arguments of ownership on the way in.
