Kilgore 661

After yesterdays post I thought I would look into Kilgore 661’s work at producing an affordable alternative for the gigapixel camera. Kilgore 661 is based near Bristol in the south west of england as is a self confessed born tinkerer and enthusiast. He has recently been envolved with the global connection project which is a project that compiles images around the world of natural disasters and crisis’ working with people like, Google world, National Geographic and Nasa they produce huge gigapixel panoramic images.

Nasa began the project by develoiping a robot that would crawl the surface of mars taking such detailed gigapixel images that they could examine the surface from shadows and relief patterns. This was the Mars Exploration Rover. It was soon realised that this technology could be useful back on earth but as you can imagine the cost of such cameras meant your average photography enthusiast would never be able to take such photos.

Well this was not satisfactory for Kilgore 661 as the ex army man decided to think outside the box and find a solution.

Kilgore 661 routed out his old lego and mechano sets and started playing around with the functionality of such a device using a standard DSLR camera. Obviously he didn’t get a solution straight away but Kilgore persisted until he got a working device that would tilt the camera and move it very slightly enabling the camera to take 100s of images in slightly different positions until the data is sent to a  special software pachage that then stitches these photographs together so they apear in great detail in a large panoramic fashion. This combined makes up a gigapixel image with great clarity for a fraction of the price it would normally cost.
