How Manga took over the world
Urbis exhibition
13th March -27th September 2008
I recently visited the Urbis exhibition, “How Manga took over the World”, I have always been awre of Manga’s influence in design and images such as “Hello Kitty” and “Powerpuff girls” have dominated the media. As a design student alot of my collegues embraced the style and typical catagoristics of Manga illustrations but it had never been something I had particularly looked at before. Manga has always reminded me of cheesy japanese childrens cartoons that had been dubbed for Western audiances and I had never fully appreciated the extent that this art form has manifested in everyday life.
The exhibition looks at the history of Manga and its introduction into contemporary western culture through Cute Manga, Action Manga, Manga as Communication, Manga in Art Fashion and Design and Erotic Manga (Adults Only).
Its free to visit, and although I only wandered in to look at the fashion exhibition I couldn’t help but be drawn into the Manga Exhibition, it was fun, informative and opened my eyes to how much of an influence Manga has been to design in modern society. The fun, colourful exhibition has plenty of activities for you to get involved in and changed my preconceptions that Manga can only be cute and childish. The exhibition shows that Manga can have a darker side and the erotic section proves that Manga is definately NOT “just for kids”.
