Practical Photography

Todays boxers are raising there profile but this is not being recorded in iconic photography.

Sports Photography has always been a lucrative business and images crop up everywhere, great action shots, team shots, portraits it has become more and more popular.

With the increasing poplularity of boxing I’m sure this sport will soon have there own entourage of photographers using every opportunity to turn there images into merchandise.

Sports photography is popular in sports memorabilia shops and websites but recent boxing seems yet to make a mark.

The most popular boxing photos would be Neil Leifer’s images of Muhammed Ali, these are poplular even today with Prints and posters being sold in abundance. Football images, Tennis images etc are popular today and sold in poster shops, memorabillia shops and even home stores! As yet the iconic images of David Haye, Joe Calzaghe and Ricky Hatton aren’t quite so accessible.

Boxing as a sport has come a long way recently and boxers are becoming as popular as footballers and tv stars, the likes of Team Calzaghe and Amir Khan are busy raising their profile. Amir Khan is the face of Reebok and the young Bolton lad has his images plastered over billboards and magazines, but what of those iconic moments, the Knock out punches and even those moments in training that capture the emotion or determination of the star we look up to. I think it is only a matter of time before photographers start to cash in on the marketing appeal of these rising celebrities.

Golden boy Productions are the biggest and most expensive boxing promotors in the world and I’m surprised that they haven’t been cashing in on this already, perhaps its down to British promoters such as box pro to use there photography skills to the best advantage backing our own british boxing stars.

I already know box pro will be present at the Ricky Hatton Homecoming fight on Saturday backing Ricky so lets hope Ricky gives us a knockout to immortalise.
